Life Happens, a nonprofit organization aimed towards providing life insurance and financial planning education, recently announced the recipients of the 2020 Life Lessons Scholarship Program. In 2020, Life Happens awarded a whopping $351,000 to 48 incoming and current college students across the country who have experienced the loss of a parent or guardian who had little or no life insurance at the time of their passing.
The organization awarded 18 various scholarships to the 48 students, ranging in value from $1,000 to $20,000. Since the Life Lessons Scholarship Programās launch in 2005, Life Happens has awarded over $2.2 million to more than 600 American students.
Because of the widespread, devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Life Happens also chose to expand its Life Lessons Scholarship Program by starting the COVID-19 Relief Scholarship campaign. The fund will provide $10,000 to 10 students who lost a parent or guardian to COVID-19. The organization is currently raising funds for the program and expects to go into effect in 2021. Applications for all 2021 scholarships will be available beginning next February.
Losing a loved one is difficult but adding the extra stress of losing a guardian and their income without a financial backup plan can feel insurmountable. Life Happensā most substantial scholarship, the Life Happens $20,000 Scholarship, was awarded to Zoe Mulzet, who lost her father when she was in the ninth grade. Though Mulzetās father had a small life insurance policy, Mulzet was unable to access the funds after her fatherās passing. After worrying for years about whether she could afford to attend college, Mulzet will be able to utilize the Life Happens scholarship money to attend Northampton Area Community College.
āMany donāt realize the importance and value of life insurance until they experience the loss of a loved one,ā said Life Happens CEO and President Faisa Stafford. āAt Life Happens, we are honored to support students and help lift some of the financial burden associated with losing a parent so that it doesnāt have to get in the way of their future.ā
Beginning in 1994, Life Happens provides high-quality, objective information to life insurance consumers. The organization avoids endorsing specific products or services and aims to promote education about the importance of the life insurance and financial industry. Throughout the year, Life Happens hosts webinars and interactive awareness events, like life insurance awareness month each September, to promote knowledge surrounding the importance of protecting oneās family and their financial future.
