With the Fourth of July right around the corner, you can expect great company, great food, and a greater sense of patriotism. This year, the USA will turn 247 years young. Funnily enough, this makes the USA the fifth oldest nation in the world, followed by the Vatican (1274), San Marino (1600), Morocco (1631), and Oman (1749). The Fourth of July has been celebrated as far back as 1776, when Congress ratified the original Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia on July 4, 1776. Hence the name Independence Day; that is just a brief history lesson there for you! During colonial times the earliest celebration occurred immediately after the Declaration of Independence was signed. These celebrations consisted of parades, bonfires, and firing muskets or cannons. Today, the Fourth is met with summer fun and family gatherings, a nice trip to the lake, or grilling burgers in the backyard to celebrate our freedom. Firing cannons sounds fun and all, but I have a few WAY safer options to celebrate the Fourth this year with the whole family. Here are three great Fourth of July ideas!

Visit Your Local Pool

Nothing screams SUMMER louder than visiting your local pool. If you want to save some money this year, a trip to your local pool could be very budget-friendly. Community pool admission prices can range anywhere from a $30 monthly membership to as low as $6 for adult passes. Keep in mind prices near you may vary, so shop around for a low-cost family outing. Some pools have kiddie areas available if you have children who cannot yet swim, and many local pools have lifeguards on duty to help watch your children. This service frees you up to take in a few sun rays while you “supervise.” Do not worry; no one can tell you are napping under your sunglasses. Just remember to apply enough sunscreen!

Host a Family Cook Out

The best way to celebrate the holiday is with friends and family. Being together promotes increased mental health and decreased loneliness. Ask yourself, when was the last time you enjoyed your extended family’s presence? Take a second to call them up, send a text message, or in true patriot fashion, send a carrier pigeon (whatever works, you know?). However you spread the word, be sure to load up on steaks, hamburger patties, and loads of corn on the cob. The holiday is also a great excuse to purchase a new grill.

Attend a Fireworks Show

There is nothing more beautiful than seeing those sparks light up the night sky. As you take in the sight overhead, a sense of pride shines over you. After you have eaten your burgers and ice cream, gather up your lawn chairs and head to your local fireworks show. Tickets can range anywhere from $10 to $30 per ticket, depending on the scale. Don’t forget to account for those pesky parking fees! Check your local listings for special discounts and times. This year, spread the love, hold your family close, and show off your Fourth of July pride! Small disclaimer: Performing your own fireworks show is not only dangerous, it is also illegal. Please do not attempt to discharge your own fireworks.
