The Singapore government began distributing TraceTogether tokens to step up their contact tracing measures. Singapore residents get contact tracing tokens to attempt to detect signs of COVID-19 earlier than normal. The ultimate goal of this is to minimize the spread of COVID-19 in the Asian nation.
Singapore’s Ministry of Health (MOH) announced on September 9 that it will test the deployment of SafeEntry, which requires the use of either the TraceTogether app or token to check-in at venues.
More testing will take place in October at bigger business-to-business events before it expands to include high-traffic places such as movie theaters, restaurants, and other businesses.
The Smart Nation office and Minister of Health said that distribution of the tokens will start with areas that have more elderly people who have a higher probability of contracting COVID-19 and are less likely to have the TraceTogether app.
Singapore has also implemented a self-check and message service so that people can be alerted if they have visited the same venues at the same time as people who have COVID-19.
The self-check will be available on the TraceTogether app, SingPass Mobile, or wereyouthere.safeentry.gov.sg.
If this program benefits Singapore residents, more countries around the world could adopt a similar type of campaign to try and stop the spread of COVID-19 while also allowing for events with larger crowds. While nothing will be completely safe until there is a vaccine, this is a big first step to stopping the spread as it catches it early and with great accuracy.
To this date, Singapore – a country of 5.6 million people – has had 57,627 cases of COVID-19 with 27 deaths according to the Johns Hopkins University COVID-19 global map.
While this is a relatively small country, Singapore has big plans for combating COVID-19 and making sure their citizens are taken care of.
