Joseph Mwawasi’s Career

Joseph Mwawasi has worked diligently to get to where he is in his insurance career. In 2013, he began operating as a captive agent with a life insurance company. Joseph knew he wanted to work for himself and also get into a field of work where he could help others build a better future. So, insurance sales was a natural fit for him. Like anyone starting a new career, there were initial rough times, but Joseph did not give up. Experienced professionals offered him mentorship, and Joseph learned all he could about the industry. He also observed how his employer created financial stability for themselves as well as consumers and their families. Those positive attributes of the job kept him going.

Joseph soon prospered a great deal, and by 2015, he developed his agency, JM Elite Insurance Services, in Hurst, Texas. He and his agents serve the Dallas-Fort Worth community and offer assistance with Medicare, ACA, life, ancillary, and supplemental products. Joseph says his agency is still growing, and everyone is always learning. The mentorship they have received from Empower Brokerage has significantly altered their course in an upward trajectory. Mr. Mwawasi expresses that Empower Brokerage’s mentorship from President and CEO Rodney Culp and ACA Group and Ancillary Sales Director Jeff Hess, as well as other staff, have greatly helped them navigate their careers and agency. Joseph says Empower’s influence also includes helping them put the tools in place where they can function behind the scenes, such as following compliance rules.

Joseph recalls that in 2016, he received a phone call and invitation to a seminar introducing him to the South Lake, Texas-based organization. He wanted to expand his sales to include health products, so Joseph was intrigued about attending the event. The seminar convinced him he needed to partner with the field marketing organization (FMO). What persuaded him? The DFW agent explains that Empower’s vision and core values align with his. Also, Joseph was receptive to Empower Brokerage’s business structure for working with agents.

Early in the partnership, Joseph recalls struggling with presenting comprehensive coverage to clients in a package format. After learning of his struggles, Rodney Culp invited Joseph to come by the Empower Brokerage office and sit in on Rodney’s sales calls. The session lasted for about three hours. Joseph left the meeting with more confidence. He appreciated this pivotal training experience and was soon closing sales with ease. Now, Joseph Mwawasi passes down the knowledge he learned to help agents close sales.

Mr. Mwawasi also appreciates learning from experienced producers he has met attending events at Empower Brokerage’s home office or the invitation-only reward trips for top sellers. “These agents make things happen,” says the four-time reward trip attendee. “You get to go on these trips [multiple] times and see familiar faces. You understand how they make it there, impact their community, how they carry themselves with their clients. It is a wealth of information.”

Joseph also values how Empower Brokerage’s training videos are so detailed and benefit agents. He shares the training helped his new agents reduce the time it takes them to learn the insurance business. “I had experiences with other FMOs. It is night and day,” explains Joseph. He further states that Empower Brokerage differs from other FMOs because agents don’t feel alone or overwhelmed with too much to learn. Regardless of an agent’s level of knowledge, “the [Empower] team will make sure your growth is tailored to your pace,” says Mr. Mwawasi.

Every person has goals. Joseph can remember when he first started on the health side and set a goal of signing up 50 clients during his first enrollment season. Little did he know that he would quickly exceed those goals that year. “As the season came, goals went up. The more we were willing to learn, then the simpler it became to be able to help other folks,” says Joseph. Nearly 10 years into his agency’s existence, Joseph sets high goals for himself and those in his circle. “We are working to become a household name,” says the JM Elite Insurance owner. They intend to focus on self-employed individuals who want health coverage and desire insurance tools to protect themselves from whatever comes their way while not diminishing their savings.

Recommendations and Relaxation

As he enters his 13th year of insurance sales, Joseph surely has good advice to share with new agents as well as those who are looking for an FMO. “For new agents, trust in the process, and results will come,” says Mr. Mwawasi. He also encourages agents to know why they are working in this field. Joseph believes that when an agent serves clients well, and the agent’s why is big enough, then the how will come.

Regarding agents looking for an FMO, Joseph suggests that an agency or agent look for an organization with the same core values. He found that at Empower. Joseph states that if you value taking care of your clients and having the tools in place and want a trusted FMO, then he recommends Empower. “That is our experience over the last 10 years.”

Outside of work, Joseph enjoys spending time with his family and dog. The family relishes the outdoors and partaking in activities like swimming, fishing, hiking, and traveling. Joseph also has a passion for learning. He loves a challenge. He finds it exciting to learn a new sport, hobby, or language.

The joy of helping others drives Joseph Mwawasi in his daily life and sales efforts. Great satisfaction exists when one can positively impact other people’s lives in such a vital way. Joseph says in whatever form help comes, it is a tool human beings receive to reach out and help others in their community.
