Empower Brokerage was proud to sponsor Villa Del Sol’s senior social event in Brownsville, Texas. The adult community at Villa Del Sol apartments hosted lotería – a traditional Mexican card game. Lotería is the Spanish word for lottery. It’s very similar to the game of bingo, and is often referred to as “Mexican Bingo”. Like U.S. bingo it is a traditional game of chance. However, Lotería uses images on a deck of cards, rather than numbered ping pongs balls.

“The origin of lotería can be traced far back in history. The game originated in Italy in the 15th century and was brought to New Spain (modern Mexico) in 1769. In the beginning, lotería was a hobby of the upper classes, but eventually it became a tradition at Mexican fairs.
Don Clemente Jacques began publishing the game in 1887 The current images have become iconic in Mexican culture, as well as gaining popularity in the US and some European countries. Other popular Lotería sets are Lotería Leo, Gacela and Lotería de mi tierra. 
During the 1930s, the Catholic church came up with their own version of la Lotería. It consisted of Catholic images instead of the traditional images used in the original game. The Catholic church did this to promote their beliefs by making their very own game board similar to the Lotería.”
Common Senior Questions
Dori Moody, the Regional Sales Director at Empower Brokerage, along with Tricia Garza, Event Coordinator, gave a presentation about upcoming changes to Medicare benefits before the lotería games began. Villa Del Sol had a great turnout of residents who played lotería. Over 30 seniors attended, the majority of whom are on Medicare or Medicaid.
Dori and Tricia were on hand to answer any questions the residents may have had on their medicare benefits. They also scheduled appointments with seniors who wanted a more in-depth benefits review of their existing plans. Including checking their medication list to make sure they are on the right plan for 2020. According to Dori, the most common questions the seniors had were about hearing aids and vision benefits, and which Medicare plans covered them.
Villa Del Sol’s residents all had a great time playing lotería. As Dori explained, she can always count on the seniors to show up and play. “It’s one of their favorite pastimes to participate in!” Dori and Tricia provided prizes for the winners – making sure to consider products they knew the seniors would use.
