Grammar: it was either your bread and butter or the bane of your existence in school. Regardless of how you felt, though, grammar was hard to learn! With ever-changing dialects and ideals of “proper” speech, it can be difficult to ensure that you are crafting quality, legible content. If you are someone who writes often – say for work or school – or just someone who wants to improve their writing skills, check out these tips on how to improve your grammar!
Read a Variety of Materials
Perhaps the easiest way to improve your grammar is to read! Typically, published pieces like books and articles will already have been proofread for correct grammar and style based on the type of content and the subject material. By reading materials from a variety of sources, you are repeatedly exposing yourself to good grammar, which will rub off on you over time!
Utilize a Grammar Manual
Back when I worked as a journalist, I was required to write in AP style. Yes, you read that right; there are different styles of “proper” grammar and syntax based on the purpose of your writing. I referenced an AP Stylebook often to make sure that I was using correct formatting and language.
There are different guidebooks, both official and unofficial, for all sorts of writing! These manuals make checking rules super easy and are sure to keep you on the right track with your grammar! If you can’t afford to buy a guidebook or manual, Google will be your best friend! There are tons of beneficial resources available for free at the click of a button!
Ask for Feedback
A great way to improve your grammar is to have friends or family proofread your work and provide feedback! If you don’t know anyone who can proofread your work and offer feedback, try creating an account on grammarly.com! Grammarly is an online proofreading tool that allows you to upload or copy/paste documents, set specific goals and parameters, and see your potential grammatical mistakes in real-time! There is a paid version available, if you can afford it or if you write often, but the free version of the software works great for everyday use! You can even download an extension to put the software to use online and in your Word documents as you type!

Practice, Practice, Practice!
As with most things, the best way to improve your writing skills is to write! When you write, you are solidifying your skills, so keep grammar at the forefront of your mind while writing and your skills will improve with each piece you create!
