Storms have begun hitting the country, kicking off hurricane season. Now, there’s not much one can do to stop a hurricane, but you sure can be prepared for it.
To keep you and your family safe, there are a few steps you can take to help yourself prepare for the potential of a hurricane.
Study Your Evacuation Route
Your evacuation route is going to vary based on your location. There are areas known as surge zones. Surge zones are areas that are more prone to flooding during a hurricane or storm. Surge zone maps are used to determine evacuation routes. Discover if you are in a surge zone and what your evacuation route should be.
Gather Supplies
The Red Cross has provided a list of supplies that should be acquired to successfully manage a hurricane. The list includes:
- Water: a 3-day supply (one gallon per person per day)
- Food: a 3-day supply of non-perishable food, easy-to-make food
- Flashlight
- Battery-powered radio
- First aid kit
- Medications: at least 7 days’ worth, and medical items (hearing aids with extra batteries, glasses, contact lenses, syringes, cane)
- Sanitation and personal hygiene items
- Family and emergency contact information
Make an Emergency Plan
You may not always be near your family when disaster strikes. Therefore, it is important to have a plan that you and your family will follow in the case of an emergency. This can be done by gathering your family and answering some key questions about contact information, shelters nearby, and evacuation routes.
Remember Your Pets
Think of your pet as another child or member of your family. They need their own set of supplies and emergency plans. If a shelter were to become the only option for your family, you would want to make sure that they accept pets, as most of them do not. Similarly, they should be included in any evacuation plans.
As much as nature is beautiful, it can be equally terrifying. Natural events such as hurricanes can be devastating but there are small things you can do to prepare to face them head-on.
